Do you want help?

I offer a diverse group of tools to help clients.  I prescribe medications.   I use Hypnotherapy for the "remote control of your brain" or Guided Mindful Meditation,  I use education to strengthen the team approach between me and you. I also do Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.  Most often I use a combination of these tools which suit you best.

Are you getting the recommended 7-9 hours sleep every night?  Do you need coffee to "wake up" in the morning? Are you able to wake without an alarm?

Or maybe you are struggling with getting a good, solid night's sleep on a regular basis and realize it is impacting your memory, mood, immune system, metabolism, blood glucose levels, cardiac disease,  &/or blood pressure.

Are you struggling with an issue or feeling overwhelmed,  or stuck?

Or perhaps you are simply ready to address some issues, to reach a higher level in your career, relationships or add a deeper level of meaning to your life.

Perhaps you have stress, panic attacks, anxiety, or fears of public speaking and want help to get rid of them.

Perhaps  you are struggling with a loss...

Or perhaps you have a child struggling with school anxiety, test anxiety, dog phobia, needle phobia?

Do you want to stop smoking?  ( I have a money back guarantee with one hypnotherapy session).

Or maybe you CONSCIOUSLY know what you want to do or change, yet SUBCONSCIOUSLY sabotage yourself,  or just can't seem to do what you want or need to do.  Hypnotherapy is great for this!

About my work as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

I am Shirley Furman, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner for 20 years, who finds joy in helping clients move to their optimum health.

I offer an integrative, holistic approach that focuses on sleep, physical activity, nutrition, mental health and lifestyle as a means to create balance with the ultimate goal of achieving mind, body, and spiritual contentment.  Treatment is offered through Biological, Psychological, Social, Spiritual, Conscious and Subconscious approaches in treatment, depending on your needs and preferences.  Cognitive Behavior, Mindfulness, Guided imagery, Hypnotherapy and Medication Management are all offered in a multi-approach to help clients remove barriers to better handle stress and improve their situations.   Important health focus includes Sleep, Physical Activity, and Nutrition.  As a sleep specialist, I am deeply concerned about the growing sleep deprivation crisis.  I'm equally concerned about most medications that are used to treat insomnia.  Studies have recently shown that benzodiazepines and similar drugs for anxiety or sleep (Ambien, Halcion, Klonopin, Restoril, Valium, Xanax and others) can increase one’s risk of Alzheimer’s or Dementia by 60%!  (British Medical Journal, Sept. 9th 2014).  I enjoy helping clients conquer insomnia without having to depend on sleeping pills with my unique combination of the use of Hypnotherapy and CBTi (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) and if medication is still needed for sleep, I recommend medications that do not create addictions nor dependence.

Hypnotherapy has been well-validated for its efficacy in treating anxiety, depression, insomnia, freedom from bad habits, smoking cessation, (with a money back guarantee!) and as a form of pain relief post surgery, as well as improving sport’s performance.  It has been used to deal with grief, gastro-intestinal problems including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) and teeth grinding at night. Hypnotherapy sessions usually leave the client feeling relaxed and refreshed.  Sessions are recorded so that clients can use them as frequently as they wish.  Kids typically enjoy hypnotherapy and parents appreciate a way to decrease, wean off or avoid medication.

To clients who are already being seen by a therapist, I offer hypnotherapy and or prescriptions/medication management or assistance in weaning off medications,  as well as treatment of sleep deprivation or insomnia with CBTi and Hypnotherapy.  These are parts of the uniquely individualized options that are offered to help you with your specific issues. I believe in collaborating with other treating professionals, and welcome their questions and input to provide you with the best integrated care.  For those who do not already have a therapist, I can also offer therapy or can recommend some good therapists.

Confidentiality and Access to Care

My unique practice gives you a “concierge-style” approach without the additional yearly fees.  I take my own calls each night, weekends, holidays and vacations, without passing you off to other health care providers.   I am available by text (949-723-1993) (The BEST way to reach me). or voicemail (949) 467-4233, outside the normal appointment hours for brief exchanges offering more available support between sessions.  My  availability and accessibility to my clients reflect the type of unique, comprehensive, personalized, confidential  continuity of care, that I offer clients.

While emergency issues or worsening of symptoms or complex issues are not appropriate topics for email or voicemail nor text, I encourage clients to ask questions about medications, side effects, or give me updates on recent events in their lives, or other issues when it is convenient for them, even between appointment times.

If needed or desired, or for more complex concerns, I can be contacted to schedule an earlier appointment in-between scheduled sessions to deal with issues, new crises, medication changes, or more detailed situations that arise.
