About my work as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner 

 

I am Shirley Furman, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner for 20 years, who finds joy in helping clients move to optimum health.

I offer an integrative, holistic approach that focuses on sleep, physical activity, nutrition, mental health and lifestyle as a means to create balance with the ultimate goal of achieving mind, body, and spiritual contentment.  Treatment is offered through Biological, Psychological, Social, Spiritual, Conscious and Subconscious approaches in treatment, depending on your needs and preferences.  Cognitive Behavior, Mindfulness, Guided imagery, Hypnotherapy and Medication Management are all offered in a multi-approach to help clients remove barriers to better handle stress and improve their situations.   Important health focus includes Sleep, Physical Activity, and Nutrition.  As a sleep specialist, I am deeply concerned about the growing sleep deprivation crisis.  I'm equally concerned about most medications that are used to treat insomnia.  Studies have recently shown that benzodiazepines and similar drugs for anxiety or sleep (Ambien, Halcion, Klonopin, Restoril, Valium, Xanax and others) can increase one’s risk of Alzheimer’s or Dementia by 60%!  (British Medical Journal, Sept. 9th 2014).  I enjoy helping clients conquer insomnia without having to depend on sleeping pills with my unique combination of the use of Hypnotherapy and CBTi (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) and if medication is still needed for sleep, I recommend medications that do not create addictions nor dependence.

Confidentiality and Access to Care

My unique practice gives you a “concierge-style” approach without the additional yearly fees.  I take my own calls each night, weekends, holidays and vacations, without passing you off to other health care providers.  . I am available by text (949-723-1993) or voicemail (949) 467-4233, outside the normal appointment hours for brief exchanges offering more available support between sessions.  My  availability and accessibility to my clients reflect the type of unique, comprehensive, personalized, confidential  continuity of care, that I offer clients.

While emergency issues or worsening of symptoms or complex issues are not appropriate topics for email or voicemail nor text, I encourage clients to ask questions about medications, side effects, or give me updates on recent events in their lives, or other issues when it is convenient for them, even between appointment times.

If needed or desired, or for more complex concerns, I can be contacted to schedule an earlier appointment in-between scheduled sessions to deal with issues, new crises, medication changes, or more detailed situations that arise.
